We spent the next few days meandering around several Mekong islands south of Ben Tre and West towards Vihn Long cycling through tiny dirt road and staying at rustic homestay farms and guesthouses en route.
We had massive rainstorms resulting in muddy riding and muggy weather. The riding was through tropical byways, under full shade of huge leaves, full to the brim of exotic fruits, amazing flowers, butterflies the size of your hand, fireflies, crossing tiny bridges the width of the trailer and of course the usual harangue of screaming grannies trying to grab A and Z (Aran’s getting a bit over it now!).
Each area has its own speciality. On one island they produce coconuts, on another farms of tropical plants, on another only dragon fruit.
Water everywhere…always a canal on one side or the other and countless ferries. Mekong boats of every type…houseboats, fishing boats, sampans being pushed along by ladies with poles, even market boats selling the local produce.
Off now towards Can Tho and it’s famous floating markets.
